PHRASE: to eat crow
MEANING : to be forced to do something extremely distasteful
or humiliating.
HISTORY: The expression is of American origin. In the Anglo-American
war of of 1812-14, an American soldier crossed the British lines
and killed a crow for sport. A British officer charged the American
soldier with trespass and forced him at gunpoint to eat a bit of the
dead crow. After he was released, the American soldier turned his gun
on the British officer and forced him to eat the reminder of the crow.
This is the story behind the idiom.
